Love, yes, passes through the stomach, but it is nourished even better with a little alcohol, which relaxes, creates flirty moods, awakens passion. And these 2 components, of all the all day shops in town, if we were asked, we would exclaim one for you to experience in the newest: And that’s – you guessed right – Wanna FLERT, the instant hit of Athens’ searched-out, and specifically its restless, stylish, creative and “in the know” part.
Long before all this happened, before the hype, before the lunches with perfect brunch and before the iconic 90’s parties that have made it a benchmark, this spot on the corner of Mikonos and Aesopou streets was an abandoned space that needed care. Giorgos Fourakis and his team “resurrected” it with love, setting up a beautiful setting that combines the “before” with the “now”, mosaic below, neon and greenery above, the necessary osmosis with the bar from everywhere, atmospheric lighting, everlasting summer vibe.
“How did the name come about?” I ask him. “It’s a top secret”, he replies laughing, “we’ll reveal it in our 50 years”, he continues, and no matter how much I insist, he doesn’t answer me. “That’s better”, I think, that’s how myths are created after all. And it seems to be true, since in its year and a half, Wanna FLERT is featured in all the hip timelines, it’s on every foodie’s bucket list, it has a fanatic audience that now knows that they will find something beautiful there any time of the day, even if it’s going with their laptop to get some work done while enjoying a cup of their specialty 100% arabica blend.
In the kitchen now, head chef Maria Siachou is not just another cook as you have recorded her in your conscious and unconscious mind: A representative example is her Pancakes Spanakopita inspired pancakes, consisting of a pancake mix with spinach, cauliflower, myrrh and other Greek herbs, a delicious feta sauce and a fried egg on top or the French Toast with fluffy brioche, flavoured with sugar and cinnamon, dipped in patisserie cream, praline and homemade forest fruit jam! Among the choices, there is no shortage of airy sando – soon to be tacos – eggs in various versions, pinsas made with dough that is stoically aged to accommodate fresh, quality ingredients, i.e. ideas, textures and flavours that set nicely with wine.
His bar, on the other hand, opens a big discussion that raises many… signatures. Lambros Karamanos has worked in many important shops in Mykonos and “has it”. You can tell from the first sip of his own version of Mai Tai – the amazing Wanna Tai Flirt – topped with Zombie cream, but also the Kindly Fire Flirt, with watermelon syrup, yoghurt liqueur and tequila. All of this, to the sounds of fine musicians of course, as many notable, young DJ’s have passed through the decks making “hummus”, such as Jackie O’ Mykonos’ Sella, Clubkid, Paradisco, etc.
Through a cursed law, few places downtown manage to break the ice like Wanna FLERT. The vibe of his team, the vibe of the place, that casual drink that can turn into an impromptu party in an instant, is exactly what we want to create memories, to say we had a good time. But also for a first date… Bottom line: Yes we wanna!
